Do you know the potholes in the digital BIM streets?

Perhaps you remember my article from July 2015. I remembered yesterday again and thought about whether something has changed since the time. The answer is: Yesno.

We have now made great progress. We are not discussing whether we want to introduce BIM, but how fast we can make it and what methods we want to implement the BIM methodology. My personal opinion on the question „How should we introduce BIM?“ You know. In my blog I wrote about the topic. A large publishing house gave me the opportunity to offer a complete series of seminars on this topic. The seminar is already in progress.

Yes, something has changed.

In the German-speaking world, the software market is historically one of the most diverse in the world. At the same time, the economic area is characterized by the middle class. The software diversity and the operating variables exclude the topic Closed-BIM in the various BIM projects. Open-BIM requires a well-functioning IFC interface in the software products. In the IFC area, many software producers have made good progress over the past two years. Whether the BIM projects „Closed“ or „Open“ are finally implemented, the responsible persons and donors will decide on a case by case basis.

You may also remember my article on the BIM professions. In my list I came to over twenty. At least three of these will certainly be more specific: the BIM manager, the BIM coordinator and the BIM constructor. These three professional pictures are on everyone’s lips. Many digital tools have long been available for the BIM designer. CAD software products are no longer part of everyday life. There are also interesting products available for the BIM coordinator to check the consistency of the digital models. The selection of the BIM servers has also grown in the last two years. It is a hotly contested market.

No, nothing has changed – or is it?

What digital tools do BIM managers use? We must make a distinction as to which methodology the BIM managers use to organize the BIM projects. At least, the BIM methodology describes how the digital models are treated and how the digital data flow is to take place within a BIM project. However, the BIM methodology is not suitable for the organization of teams. This realization is also becoming more and more popular. Our large software vendors offer many beautiful products and solutions. But everything revolves around the model or starts only when the first objects of the model have been created.

How do you organize a team? What tools did you use? The main answer to these questions will be as follows: Project meetings organized via Outlook and occasionally done through Skype, a variety of emails, which usually have an ever-growing mailing list, a variety of Excel Lists, and when circumstances dictate, the smartphone or good old phone is handled. And always ask yourself whether you have informed all the team members or forgotten someone else.

I also use the Outlook calendar, write countless emails, create Excel tables, skype and phone calls. Each of us needs digital tools to organize his workplace. But for the organization of teams (also BIM teams) and projects (also BIM projects) you need other digital tools. The tools must make team work transparent, accessible at all times, and contribute to a significant reduction in project discussions. To do this, you need a different methodology and a digital tool that is appropriate for the methodology.

In my paid seminars „The digital organization of BIM teams“, I introduce you to the methodology, a digital tool and various variants for the digital organization of BIM teams. On my website I published the dates. There you can also register for my seminars. Please send me a message if you would like a seminar in English. At the moment, the content is only available in German.
